During my journey to visit the Five Great Zen Temples of Kamakura in May 2025, I visited Jomyo-ji, ranked fifth among them. Since I took a bus from Kamakura Station, it was less crowded than the area around the station, and I was able to offer my prayers in a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
Jomyo-ji Temple
Jomyo-ji is said to have been founded in 1188 (Bunji 4) by Ashikaga Yoshikane, with Taiko Gyoyu as its founding priest.

At Kisen-an, where monks gathered to drink tea in the 1500s, you can enjoy a tea ceremony (for a fee). The garden is a traditional kare-sansui (dry landscape). Sipping matcha while gazing at the garden is sure to bring peace of mind.
Though not open to the public, the temple houses a seated statue of Taiko Gyoyu from the Nanboku-chō period, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. On the eastern hill within the temple grounds, there is the “Kamatari Inari Shrine,” associated with a legend about the origin of the name “Kamakura.”
