2025年5月、鎌倉五山第四位の浄智寺を訪れました。苔むした石垣の間の石段を登っていくと、短パン一枚の西洋人男性がはだしで階段をものすごい勢いで駆け下りてきました。トレーニングでしょうか？ 神聖な場所では控えて欲しいかも……。
In May 2025, I visited Jōchi-ji Temple, ranked fourth among the Five Great Zen Temples of Kamakura. When I climbed the stone stairs between mossy stone walls, a half-naked Western male rushed down the stairs. Doing Exercise? Exercise in a holy place may be unfavorable……
さて、浄智寺ですが、鎌倉幕府第5代執権北条時頼の三男である北条宗政の菩提を弔うために1281年頃に創建されました。
Jōchi-ji was founded around 1281 to commemorate the soul of Hōjō Munemasa, the third son of Hōjō Tokiyori, the fifth regent of the Kamakura shogunate.
山門 Sanmon
総門には『寶所在近（ほうしょざいきん）』（仏を信じ、修行を積めば心の平穏が得られる）の文字が掲げられています。門の手前には鎌倉十井の一つ「甘露の井」があります。
At the main gate, you’ll find the inscription “Hōsho Zaikin” (寶所在近), meaning “If one believes in the Buddha and devotes oneself to practice, peace of mind can be attained.” In front of the gate is “Kanro no I” (Well of Sweet Dew), one of the Ten Famous Wells of Kamakura.
鐘楼門（しょうろうもん）Shōrōmon (Bell Tower Gate)
鎌倉では珍しい唐様の鐘楼門です。鐘楼門は鐘つき堂を兼ねた山門で、1階には山門があり、2階には花頭窓という花形の印象的な窓と梵鐘が下げられています。2007年に再建された鐘楼門は「山居幽勝」の額が掲げられ、花頭窓のある上層には1649年（慶安2年）の梵鐘が吊るされています。(「浄智寺」HPより引用）
This is a rare Tang-style bell tower gate in Kamakura. It serves both as the entrance gate and a belfry. The lower level forms the gate, while the upper level features a flower-shaped “Katomado” window and houses a hanging bell. Rebuilt in 2007, the gate bears a plaque reading “Sankyo Yūshō” (“Tranquil and Secluded Mountain Dwelling”). The bell hanging on the upper level dates back to 1649 (Keian 2).
本堂 曇華殿（どんげでん）Main Hall – Donge-den
曇華殿と呼ばれる仏殿。中の本尊は阿弥陀如来、釈迦如来、弥勒如来で、それぞれ過去・現世・未来の三世を象徴します。
The main hall, called Donge-den, enshrines Amida Nyorai, Shaka Nyorai, and Miroku Nyorai, representing the past, present, and future respectively.
布袋尊（ほていそん）Hotei-son
境内奥の洞窟には、鎌倉七福神のひとつである布袋尊がまつられています。お腹を撫でて元気をもらいましょう！
In a cave at the back of the temple grounds resides Hotei-son, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Kamakura. Rubbing his belly brings you good health!
