On April 24, 2025, I traveled to the Oga Peninsula.
Since I stayed near Akita Station, I first had a breakfast set meal at a diner called “Manma” inside the Akita Citizen’s Market.
It was really convenient because they open as early as 7 a.m.!
The thick slice of salmon, carefully grilled to perfection, was absolutely delicious.
I asked for half a portion of rice.
It seems you can also enjoy sashimi (raw fish) even early in the morning, so if you like sashimi, definitely give it a try!

I set off from near Akita Station by rental car, which I booked from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m..
After about an hour’s drive, I arrived at the Namahage Museum.
The Namahage costumes had a wonderfully handcrafted feel, and I really loved them!

In the Oga Shinzan Folklore Museum which is next to Namahage museum, I watched a reenactment of the Namahage ritual, which is performed across almost the entire Oga Peninsula on New Year’s Eve.
During the ritual, the Namahage figures storm into homes, shouting “Any crying children? Any lazy people here?” as they search through the house.
After that, the Namahage are warmly welcomed and treated by the family.
The Oga Namahage tradition is registered as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage under the title “Raihō-shin: Ritual Visits of Masked Deities and Spirits.”

After watching the Namahage performance, I visited Shinzan Shrine, which is located just nearby.
Every year, on the second Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of February, the Namahage Sedo Festival is held within the grounds of Shinzan Shrine.
