虹の松原 Niji-no-Matsubara (Rainbow-shaped Pine Grove)
虹の松原は、日本三大松原のひとつ（他は静岡県の「三保の松原」と福井県の「気比の松原」）。私が行った2025年1月28日は雨が降ったり止んだりしていたのですが、なんと虹がかかっていました！
「虹がよく出るから虹の松原と言うんですね？！」
と、隣で写真を撮っていた地元の女性に思わず話しかけると
「隣町に住んでますけど、私は初めて見ました」
とのこと。
Niji-no-Matsubara is one of Japan’s three great pine groves, along with Miho-no-Matsubara in Shizuoka Prefecture and Kehi-no-Matsubara in Fukui Prefecture.
When I visited on January 28, 2025, it was raining on and off — but to my surprise, a rainbow appeared!
I couldn’t help but ask a local woman who was taking photos nearby,
“Is it called ‘Niji’ (meaning ‘rainbow’ in Japanese) because rainbows often appear here?”
She replied,
“I live in a neighboring town, but this is the first time I’ve seen one!”
歴史と由来 History and Origin
調べてみたところ、虹の松原は、江戸時代に唐津藩主・寺沢広高によって防風・防砂を目的に築かれたそうです。そして「虹」の名前の由来は、松原が虹のように弧を描いているからとのこと。虹はたまたまだったのでしょうか。Niji-no-Matsubara was planted during the Edo period by Hirotaka Terazawa, the feudal lord of the Karatsu domain, to protect the area from strong winds and blowing sand.
The name “Niji” (rainbow) is said to come from the way the pine grove arches gracefully like a rainbow — not because actual rainbows often appear. Perhaps the rainbow I saw was just a lucky coincidence.
