In May 2025, I visited Jufuku-ji, ranked third among the Five Great Zen Temples of Kamakura.
There were hardly any tourists, so I was able to pay my respects in a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
Jufuku-ji Temple was founded in 1200 (the 2nd year of the Shōji era) by Hōjō Masako, the wife of Minamoto no Yoritomo, after his death. She invited the monk Eisai to establish the temple.
It is said that Jufuku-ji later became a Zen temple in the latter half of the 13th century.
A stone-paved path leads from the main gate to the inner gate, and currently, visitors are allowed up to the area just in front of the inner gate.

If you take the path to the left of the inner gate, you’ll find a cemetery. At the back of the cemetery are two small cave tombs, said to be the graves of Hōjō Masako and her son, Minamoto no Sanetomo. These graves are open for visitors to pay their respects.
