Kamakura Gozan Pilgrimage: A Journey Through the History and Spirit of Zen
現在、鎌倉は鎌倉時代の歴史的建造物と自然が調和する、東京から約1時間のところに位置する観光地。そんな鎌倉の中でも「鎌倉五山（ごさん）」（鎌倉にある臨済宗の禅寺で格式の高い順の5つの寺院）は、禅宗の歴史を今に伝える名刹として、多くの参拝者や歴史ファンを惹きつけています。今回は、この「鎌倉五山」をめぐる旅をご紹介します。
Today, Kamakura is a popular tourist destination located about an hour from Tokyo, where historical structures from the Kamakura period blend harmoniously with nature. Among the many attractions in Kamakura, the “Kamakura Gosan”—the five highest-ranking Zen temples of the Rinzai sect in Kamakura—stand out as revered temples that continue to convey the legacy of Zen Buddhism. In this post, I’ll introduce a journey through these five historic temples.

第一位 建長寺（けんちょうじ）
第二位 円覚寺（えんがくじ）

鎌倉五山のまわり方 How to Explore the Kamakura Gosan
私は一日目は午後に北鎌倉駅に到着してから円覚寺、浄智寺、建長寺をまわった後、鶴岡八幡宮にお参りし、二日目は寿福寺の後、銭洗弁天宮にも訪れて、浄妙寺に行きました。
Here’s how I did it:
On Day 1, I arrived at Kita-Kamakura Station in the afternoon and visited Engaku-ji, Jōchi-ji, and Kenchō-ji, then stopped by Tsurugaoka Hachimangū Shrine.
On Day 2, I visited Jufuku-ji, made a side trip to Zeniarai Benzaiten Shrine, and then headed to Jōmyō-ji.
坐禅会や写経会に参加したり、じっくりと見たり、抹茶をいただいたりするのであれば二日に分けるのが望ましいです。見どころを見て、交通機関を使ったりして、次々と進むのであれば一日でも可能です。
If you plan to take your time, participate in zazen (Zen meditation) sessions or sutra copying workshops, or enjoy matcha in temple tea rooms, it’s best to divide the visit over two days. However, if you prefer to focus on the main highlights and use public transportation efficiently, it’s possible to complete the pilgrimage in a single day.
鎌倉五山を1日で One day Kamakura-Gosan Route
まずは地図をご覧ください。一日で公共交通機関を使ってまわるのであれば、このようなプランはいかがでしょうか。
北鎌倉駅出発⇒円覚寺⇒浄智寺⇒建長寺⇒鎌倉駅⇒寿福寺⇒鎌倉駅⇒浄妙寺
First, take a look at the map. If you’d like to follow a one-day route using public transportation, here’s one possible itinerary.
Depart from Kita-Kamakura Station ⇒ Engaku-ji ⇒ Jōchi-ji ⇒ Kenchō-ji ⇒ Kamakura Station ⇒ Jufuku-ji ⇒ Kamakura Station ⇒ Jōmyō-ji
北鎌倉駅で下車。まずは徒歩約2分の円覚寺に行きます。
円覚寺から線路を渡って徒歩4分で浄智寺に行きます。
その後、浄妙寺から建長寺へ。Google mapを使うと、浄智寺から建長寺まで徒歩７分でした。
建長寺からバスで約7分で鎌倉駅へ。
鎌倉駅西口から徒歩10分で寿福寺（じゅふくじ）へ。鎌倉駅へ戻り、鎌倉駅東口からバスで約10分で浄妙寺へ。バス停からすぐです。またバスで鎌倉駅に戻ります。
*Get off at Kita-Kamakura Station and walk about 2 minutes to Engaku-ji Temple.
*From Engaku-ji, cross the railway tracks and walk about 4 minutes to Jōchi-ji Temple.
*Next, head to Kenchō-ji Temple from Jōchi-ji. According to Google Maps, the walk takes about 7 minutes.
*From Kenchō-ji, take a bus (about 7 minutes) to Kamakura Station.
*Walk about 10 minutes from the west exit of Kamakura Station to Jufuku-ji Temple.
*Return to the station and take a bus from the east exit of Kamakura Station (about 10 minutes) to Jōmyō-ji Temple, located just steps from the bus stop.
*Afterward, take the bus back to Kamakura Station.

建長寺（第一位） Kencho-ji
円覚寺（第二位）Enkaku-ji
鎌倉五山の第二位で、蒙古襲来の戦死者を弔うために創建されました。
寿福寺（第三位）Jufuku-ji
開基は北条政子、開山は栄西。現在はほとんどの部分を拝観できませんが、北条政子と源実朝の墓（といわれている）はお参りできます。
浄智寺（第四位）Jochi-ji
北条宗政の菩提を弔うために創建されたお寺です。
浄妙寺（第五位）Jomyo-ji
