025年1月29日（佐賀旅行2日目）、佐賀県唐津市にある「名護屋城跡（なごやじょうあと）」を訪れました。40分の城内ガイドツアーに参加しました。
On January 29, 2025 (Day 2 of my Saga trip), I visited the Ruins of Nagoya Castle (Nagoya-jō Ato) located in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture.
I joined a 40-minute guided tour of the castle grounds.
名護屋城とは What is Nagoya Castle?
名護屋城は、豊臣秀吉が朝鮮出兵のために1592年に築いた巨大な城で、日本100名城のひとつです。朝鮮半島に最も近い港である名護屋浦（現在の呼子町）に建てられました。当時の大阪城に次ぐ規模で、周辺には加藤清正、黒田長政、伊達政宗、徳川家康などの名だたる武将を含む大名たちの陣屋が150以上も建てられたというから驚きです。
しかし、秀吉が病によりなくなり朝鮮出兵が中止されると、名護屋城は廃城となりました。現在は石垣や土塁が残る名護屋城跡として整備され、国の特別史跡にも指定されています。
Nagoya Castle in Saga, different from Nagoya Castle in Nagoya-shi, Aichi Prefecture, was a massive fortress built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1592 as a base for his military campaign to invade Korea. It is also recognized as one of Japan’s Top 100 Castles.
The castle was constructed at Nagoya Port (present-day Yobuko Town), the closest harbor to the Korean Peninsula.
At the time, it was second in size only to Osaka Castle, and an astonishing 150-plus camps for warlords including Kato Kiyomasa, Kuroda Nagamasa, Date Masamune, and Tokugawa Ieyasu were established in the surrounding area.
However, after Hideyoshi’s death and the subsequent cancellation of the Korean invasions, Nagoya Castle was abandoned.
Today, the remains — including stone walls and earthen embankments — are preserved as the Ruins of Nagoya Castle, designated as a National Special Historic Site.
見どころ Highlights
1. 壮大な石垣 Magnificent Stone Walls
城跡を訪れると、まずその広さと石垣の高さに驚かされます。
一国一城令で廃城となったため、石垣が壊された跡なども見ることができました。
The first thing that struck me was the vastness of the site and the towering stone walls.
Because the castle was dismantled under the “One Castle Per Province” law during the Edo period, you can also see traces of destruction on the walls, which adds to the historical atmosphere.
2. 本丸跡からの眺め View from the castle keep (Honmaru)
本丸跡からは、玄界灘を一望できます。
ここで秀吉が野望を持って海を見ていたのかと想像すると、遠くに感じていた歴史上の人物が実在したことをあらためて感じました。
From the ruins of the castle keep, you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the sea of Genkai.
Standing there, I couldn’t help but imagine Hideyoshi gazing out over the ocean, filled with ambition. It made historical figures feel much more real and tangible.
3. 佐賀県立名護屋城博物館 Saga Prefectural Nagoya Castle Museum)
城跡に隣接する佐賀県立名護屋城博物館では、当時の地図や甲冑、出兵に関する資料や、秀吉の「黄金の茶室」（再現）などが展示されています。入館無料。
Adjacent to the castle ruins is the Saga Prefectural Nagoya Castle Museum, which exhibits historical maps, suits of armor, documents related to the Korean invasions, and a reproduction of Hideyoshi’s famous “Golden Tea Room.” Admission is free!

バス：「唐津大手口」から「名護屋城博物館入口」で降車（＊私が利用したときは、大手口へ戻るときの停留所は道の反対側ではなく同じ停留所でした）

車：唐津市街より約30分、博多・天神より約1時間半

By Bus: From “Karatsu Oteguchi” bus stop, get off at “Nagoya Castle Museum Entrance” (Nagoya-jō Hakubutsukan Iriguchi).
Note: When returning to Karatsu Oteguchi, the bus stop was not on the opposite side of the road but at the same stop.

By Car: About 30 minutes from downtown Karatsu, or about 1.5 hours from Hakata/Tenjin (Fukuoka City).
