2025年5月、鎌倉五山をめぐりました。最初に行ったのは北鎌倉駅に近い円覚寺です。
In May, 2025, I visited the five great zen temples of Kamakura. The first temple I visited is Enkaku-ji temple which is very close to Kita Kamakura station.

円覚寺 Engaku-ji Temple
円覚寺は鎌倉五山第二位の禅寺。弘安5年（1282）、時宗公は、国家の鎮護、禅を弘めたいという願い、そして蒙古襲来による殉死者を、敵味方の区別なく平等に弔うため、円覚寺の建立を発願し、円覚寺は中国・宋より招いた無学祖元禅師により開山されました。
Engaku-ji is the second-ranking temple among the Five Great Zen Temples of Kamakura (Kamakura Gozan). It was founded in 1282 (Kōan 5) by Hōjō Tokimune. His wishes were to protect the nation, promote Zen Buddhism, and honor the fallen of the Mongol invasions—regardless of whether they were friend or foe. The temple was established with the guidance of Zen Master Mugaku Sogen, who was invited from the Song Dynasty in China.
三門（山門）San-mon (Main Gate)
三門は三解脱（空・無相・無願）を象徴するといわれ、諸々の煩悩を取り払って涅槃・解脱の世界である仏殿に至る門とされています。
The San-mon symbolizes the “Three Gates of Liberation”—Emptiness, Formlessness, and Wishlessness. Passing through this gate is believed to free the mind from worldly desires and lead one toward enlightenment and nirvana, represented by the Buddha Hall beyond.
仏殿 Butsuden (Buddha Hall)
円覚寺のご本尊が祀られている建物。昭和39年（1964）の再建。
The hall where the principal deity of Engaku-ji is enshrined. The current structure was rebuilt in 1964 (Shōwa 39).
選仏場せんぶつじょう Senbutsujō (Meditation Hall)
選仏場修行僧の坐禅道場
This is a Zazen (Zen meditation) hall where monks undergo their training.
洪鐘（おおがね）Ōgane (Great Bell)
The temple is also home to the famous Ōgane, or Great Bell, known for its deep, resonant tone.
舎利殿 Shariden (worship hall)
弁天堂 Bentendō (Benten Hall)
階段は200段ぐらいあって、登るのがきつい！ けれどもそこからの眺めはすばらしかったです。
Reaching this hall requires climbing around 200 steps—it’s a bit of a workout, but the panoramic view from the top is well worth the effort.
